Nicola Bean

Nicola Bean, one of our midwives in the Maternity Observation Area at the John Radcliffe Hospital, received a DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional and compassionate care she provided for a patient who started having contractions around 20 weeks into her pregnancy.
Her nominator said: "I was in horrible pain with nearly 30 hours of contractions. The first thing Nicola did was giving me some nitrogen gas to relieve my pain.
"Once she settled my pain, she tidied my room and surroundings by removing the unwanted equipment, which immediately made me feel calmer. Nicky was empathetic and was comforting me throughout. I am also a nurse, but the way she looked after me took my pain away to an extent."
Due to unfortunate experience of losing a baby at 20 weeks four years ago, the patient recognised that she was going into labour.
"She listened to me when I said "I am going to deliver the baby now" and prepared the bed as needed. I watched the video of my delivery later and the way she treated and cared for my baby was so heart-warming.
"I will never forget her in my life – she was an angel."
Congratulations Nicola, and thank you for all you do.
