The vascular surgical service operates a dedicated ward for the care of vascular patients on Ward 6A at the John Radcliffe Hospital.
Many vascular conditions can now be treated in a less invasive manner, using interventional radiology. For some more complex conditions however, surgery is required.
What conditions are treated by vascular surgery?
Vascular disease affects the arteries and veins that carry blood throughout the body.
These conditions include:
- Aortic Aneurysms
- Carotid Artery Disease, Stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack
- Peripheral Arterial Disease
- Varicose Veins
Conditions which involve the arteries, such as aortic aneurysms, are treated in a vascular specialist centre known as the 'hub' (visit Thames Valley Vascular Centre).
Conditions which are less severe, such as varicose veins, can be treated in local hospitals so that patients do not have to travel far from home for treatment.
