The Maxillofacial Laboratory is licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency to manufacture custom-made medical devices.

Maxillofacial prosthetists and technologists design and construct facial and body prostheses, as well as custom-made surgical appliances.

These may be from prescription or direct referrals from consultants and include:

  • facial prostheses
  • contour defect prostheses
  • breast and nipple prostheses
  • digital prostheses
  • keloid splints
  • obturators
  • trauma and surgical splints.

Dental technicians construct fixed and removable intra-oral prostheses, orthodontics appliances and intra-oral splints from prescription, which may include:

  • fixed and removable dentures
  • crowns and bridges
  • fixed and removable orthodontics appliances
  • intra-oral splints.

Our dental technicians are registered with the General Dental Council as required by law.

Who uses the laboratory?

The Maxillofacial Laboratory provides a technical service to a variety of departments, including:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Orthodontics
  • Plastic Surgery
  • ENT.

We also provide a service for the dental access centres as well as receiving referrals from consultants and GPs outside the Oxford University Hospitals.
